Government announces 'decade of social action'
The government has announced a consultation process which will seek to map out a 'social action journey' supporting young people from the ages of 10 - 20 into active citizenship opportunities in their communities, such as the Scouts, Cadets, National Citizen Service (NCS) or the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

The consultation, to be led by Dame Julia Cleverdon, Vice President of Business in the Community, and Amanda Jordan, joint Chair of Corporate Citizenship. It will look at ways in which voluntary sector and business organisations can work together to support a decade of social action for young people, with the intention to:
  • create opportunities for social and intergenerational mixing;
  • increase young people's sense of social responsibility; and
  • improve their skills and value to future employers.

In a related measure, £900,000 has been awarded to The National Youth Agency (NYA) and partner O2 Think Big who are match funding an additional £500,000 to give up to 5,000 young people, including 2500 National Citizen Service graduates, the opportunity to start their own social action projects from August 2012 through to September 2013.

The Cabinet Office is due to launch the consultation in June 2012.
